Please note that the vocabulary quiz for this week has been moved to Thursday, because of the Science Spectacular on Friday, and the holiday on Monday. We’ll be reviewing words in class on Wednesday.

Hello!

Students who are planning to attend the Role Model Celebration tomorrow must get their permission slips signed tonight. I’d like to apologize for the extremely short notice with these permissions slips, but in preparing these presenations last week I simply forgot all about permission slips! Please note that each group is required to have at least one student present to accompany the presentation.

Students who are attending need to return to school at 5 o’clock. Please note that tomorrow is a half day for all students.

******Parents please help students of 5R remember to bring in old toys for their garden plots. We are staging scenes from the book “Hatchet” and need small toys to represnt objects and characters. These are needed ASAP! Thanks!

Thursday will be our short conjunctions wuiz. please see the previous post for more on this as well as online resources for extra studying.

Friday there is no school for students while teachers participate in professional development. Therefore, our vocabulary quiz will be pushed off until Monday. Please note that review will still take place Thursday, so extra studying might be needed Sunday night.

Finally, the Roman Test will be next Wednesday, the 19th. The Study Guide is posted on this blog in previous posts. Extra help is available after school.

Next Thursday, May 13th, there will be a brief quiz on conjunctions. To study, you should use your class notes as well as the worksheets handed back to you that we’ve used over the past couple of weeks. I’m also suggesting the following webpage for those who want extra study material:

In addition, please note that the date of the Roman Unit Test will be Wednesday, May 19th. Please use the Study guide posted in the previous post on this blog if you lost the one I gave you in class. It is your responsibility to borrow a classmate’s to fill in the blanks again. As always I’m available for extra help after school if you need it.

Please don’t forget that the Roman Unit Final Project is due next week. Tuesday for 5R, Wednesday for 5D.

Below is a link to the project that was assigned recently in my class. I’m also repeat-posting the Roman Unit Study Guide here so you have them both in one place.

For 5D the project is due next Wednesday, May 12th. For 5R it is due Tuesday the 11th. This is because 5R got to begin a day earlier.

Note: 5R will be presenting their powerpoints at next week’s Role Model Celebration. If you are a student in 5D and would like to present yours as well, you are welcome to. You need to have it done one day earlier however, since the Celebration is Tuesday the 11th.

Parents please be advised that I’ll be sending home permission slips only to a one student in each group in 5R so that the student can accompany the powerpoint at the celebration.

Project Details

This is the project description for students who are not going on the Kids Camp field trip.

For those who are attending school Today and Friday, we’ll be working in depth with the project all day so don’t worry about this post. This post is for the students who are home on these two days and would like clarification of the project and what is expected.

The project is to research 3 different countries’ nutritional/dietary information and form what you find into a presentable project. Good examples of information to research would be: Obesity in adults or children, average life expectancy (and maybe how it is growing or shrinking), infant death rate, agricultural stats (what they grow or what they have to import), rates of heart disease or other nutrition-related illnesses, etc.

There are no restrictions on the format of your project. It could be a poster, powerpoint, paper, speech or even a song! It’s all up to you.

If you have any questions about the project please email Mr. Reilly. Hopefully I’ll be at the desk and will get right back to you with some help.

Hello Classes,

Unfortunately the new Reilly family is sick right now and so Mr. Reilly is staying out for one more day to bring little Alice to the doctor and take care of her and Ms. Filip. I just want everyone to know that the vocabulary quiz that was set for Tuesday will now be Wednesday when I return, so please study for an extra night. I will go over the words briefly in class with you just before we take the quiz.

This is an important posting for 5D, but 5R should also pay close attention.

Since I won’t get to see 5D in class until next week because of ERBs today, Field Trip tomorrow and Community Service Day on Friday, I need 5D to continue their Roman notes with the following concepts. Also, please complete the worksheet I’ll be giving you today and have it ready for Monday morning. ALSO: please note that Monday we’ll be reviewing vocab and Tuesday will be the quiz.

You’ll need to read pages 238-241 in the textbook to complete the “Pax Romana” worksheet and understand these concepts in context.

Pax Romana: Latin for “Roman Peace,” this period lasted for over 200 years. During this time Rome did not expand its borders, but focused on strengthening the empire itself with trade, religion, entertainment and diversity. Augustus began the Pax Romana.

Augustus: Once “Octavian,” Augustus renamed himself after defeating Mark Antony and claiming control of the empire. He changed Julius Caesar’s dictatorship into an empire, therefore, Augustus was Rome’s first “imperator,” or emperor. The name Augustus means “Honored One.”

Aqueducts: Artificial waterways that were raised up on arches, and sometimes stretched as far as 100 miles. These allowed water to flow into, out of, and throughout Roman cities. Aqueducts are considered the greatest engineering legacy of the Romans.

Census: A count of all of the people in the Roman Empire. Helped in the tax collection process, which was crucial for Roman government.

Gladiators: Often slaves from conquered territories, these unwilling warriors were forced to fight to the death for Roman citizens’ entertainment in the Colosseum. Roman’s bloodlust (a love of violence) was insatiable (vocab word!), and they even forced gladiators to fight lions, tigers, bears, elephants and any other exotic animals Rome’s territory included.

Colosseum: The greatest public space in ancient Rome. This circular arena held gladiator battles, games, speeches and other events. They even executed criminals and, later, Christians in the Colosseum. This incredible building still stands today, and is often seen as the greatest symbol of Rome.

Pantheon: The greatest temple in Rome. This is where most Romans came to worship the many gods they had accumulated through conquest. Today, the Pantheon is a major tourist location, and is the oldest building in the whole world that still has a roof.
